7 Reported Benefits of CBD

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is one of the most popular, natural remedies for a host of common ailments. CBD is one of 104 cannabinoid compounds derived from Cannabis Sativa. Unlike  tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not cause the "high," psychoactive feeling often associated with cannabis.
CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant and diluted with carrier oils such as hemp seed or coconut oil and is often used to treat paint and other symptoms without the harmful side effects of common pharmaceuticals. Recent scientific studies have reported that CBD is a viable treatment for anxiety and chronic pain. Here are 7 Reported Benefits of CBD to help you make an informed decision:
1. Relieves Pain
People have used cannabis to treat pain since 2900 B.C. Today, scientists have found that some components of cannabis, including CBD, indeed relieve pain.

The human body contains a system known as the endocannabinoid system or ECS. This system regulates immune system response, pain, appetite and sleep.  Endocannabinoids are produced in your body and serve neurotransmitters that have bound themselves to cannabinoid receptors inside the nervous system.

According to numerous studies, CBD impacts endocannabinoid receptor activity, which interacts with neurotransmitters and reduces inflammation. This, in turn, helps to reduce chronic pain. One such human study showed that a combination of THC and CBD could treat pain related to arthritis and multiple sclerosis and several countries have approved an oral spray called Sativex, which has successfully treated pain related to arthritis and MS. This spray has also significantly improved pain during sleep, rest, and movement in 58 people who had rheumatoid arthritis.

2. Reduces Depression and Anxiety
Many people across the world have experienced depression or anxiety at one time in life. These two conditions are some of the most common, and they have lasting impacts on overall health and well-being.

The World Health Organization says that depression is one of the largest contributing factors to disability all over the world with anxiety disorders ranked 6th on the same list. A majority of people use prescribed pharmaceuticals to treat depression and anxiety. These drugs can cause numerous side effects including headache, sexual dysfunction, insomnia, agitation and drowsiness. In some cases, prescribed pharmaceuticals such benzodiazepines are abused and lead to crippling addiction.

CBD acts on the brain’s serotonin receptors which regulate social behavior and mood.  In a recent study preformed on a group with diagnosed social anxiety disorder, some subjects received 600 mg of CBD while others received a placebo. Those who took the CBD showed significant improvement: less anxiety, decrease in their cognitive impairment and improved performance in their speech. The placebo group showed no change whatsoever.

CBD has also been used to safely treat anxiety in children who have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as well as people with insomnia.

3. Alleviates Symptoms Related to Cancer/Cancer Treatment
CBD has proven to combat the negative side effects and symptoms related to cancer treatment including pain, vomiting and nausea.

In one study, 177 people who had pain related to cancer were given THC or CBD treatments. Group one was provided with an extract with both compounds, while group two were only given a THC extract. Group one experienced significant pain reduction while group two did not.

Another study was done with 16 people who had been undergoing chemotherapy. The combination of THC and CBD administered as a mouth spray reduced vomiting and nausea related to chemotherapy much better than standard treatments.

4. Reducing Acne
Acne is a condition that affects around 9% of the population. Certain factors can trigger acne including oily secretions made by the sebaceous glands in the skin, the overproduction of sebum and underlying inflammation, bacteria and genetics.

Recent scientific studies have shown that CBD can treat acne because of its anti-inflammatory in nature, which can reduce the production of sebum. Some studies have shown that CBD prevented sebaceous gland cells from producing excess sebum, prevented pro-acne agents such as inflammatory cytokines, and exerted anti-inflammatory properties.

As promising as these results are, further studies need to be done with CBD in order to find out how effective it is in tackling acne.

5. Neuro-Protective Properties
Researchers believe that CBDcan act on your endocannabinoid system as well as other brain signals, which can improve the quality of life for those that suffer from a neurological disorder.

CBD has been tested in numerous cases as a treatment for multiple sclerosis and epilepsy. As mentioned earlier, Sativex, which contains both THC and CBD has been proven to be an effective and safe way to reduce muscle spasticity in patients with MS. Spasms in one such study were reduced by about 75% in 276 people who experienced muscle spasticity related to multiple sclerosis. Regular medications had little to no effect on muscle spasticity.

In another study, 214 people who had a severe form of epilepsy received 0.9-2.3 grams of CBD per pound of body weight. Seizures were reduced by about 36.5%.
A third study showed that CBD had reduced seizures in children significantly, compared with a placebo. The children in this study had Dravet syndrome, an extremely complicated epilepsy disorder. Studies have also been performed on patients with Parkinson’s disease which showed that CBD improved overall quality of life and sleep.

As with any treatment, some people in these studies who experienced reactions associated with CBD treatment such as diarrhea, fever, and convulsions.

6. Heart Health Benefits
Recent studies have linked CBD with several benefits of the circulatory system and heart, including being able to control high blood pressure.

CBD may be able to treat high blood pressure naturally and effectively. In one such study, 10 men were given a 600 mg dose of CBD. The results showed a decrease in resting blood pressure over a placebo alone. These same men underwent stress tests that typically increase blood pressure and found that the 600 mg dose of CBD increased blood pressure less as a result.

Anxiety and stress-reducing properties of CBD have also been shown to lower a person’s blood pressure, according to research.

7. Other Possible Benefits
CBD has been studied as a potential treatment for numerous conditions not listed above. While thorough testing of the efficacy of CBD continues, here are a few more ailments that may be treated with CBD:
  • Preventing diabetes: CBD treatment in mice showed a decrease in diabetes by as much as 56% along with a significant reduction in inflammation
  • Anti-tumor properties: Animal and test tube studies have shown that CBD has anti-tumor qualities. It has been shown in animals to prevent the spread of lung, colon, prostate, brain, and breast cancer, which can improve their chances of recovery.
  • Substance abuse – CBD has made modifications to a person’s brain related to substance abuse and addition. CBD has shown decreased dependence on morphine and heroin in rats.
  • Antipsychotic properties – Studies have suggested that CBD might be able to help people who have mental disorders such as schizophrenia by reducing a person’s psychotic symptoms.
As with all medications, CBD may also cause some adverse reactions if taken with other medications. It’s important to discuss any medications you are taking with your doctor before you start using CBD and only by certified CBD from a reputable source.
